By the end of this course each person will leave with a spoon made from freshly cut wood, carved by their own hands using traditional wood carving techniques! First things first, we will begin how to carve safely and practice some of the most useful cuts. Once we are feeling comfortable with this, we will look at some different local woods, learning about where they come from and what are the properties of this type of wood. We will then each choose a spoon 'blank' (the basic outline of the spoon that has already been cut out) from the wood we want to work with. We begin by hollowing out the bowl of the spoon, then shaping the back and handle. We will be using new muscles in your hands that you probably didn't know you had! This will take up the bulk of the workshop with ongoing guidance, tailored to each persons ability, desired design and type of wood they are working with. We will end with some tips on how to finish and oil the spoon and how to continue whittling at home and along the way there will be more tips and info on wood and wood working so you can carry on this hobby from home! https://spoonsignoring.cargocollective.com/
I have been working as an artist for the last 13 years, exhibiting across Norway and internationally, working with a participatory based practice. I have been fascinated by wood since I was a child, walking through the woods, collecting branches to make walking sticks or pine cones to burn in the fire so when, during a residency in Japan, my love of whittling wood returned, I knew I wanted to share this with other people through workshops and classes. I have been holding spoon carving workshops over 2017 in various locations around Bergen, my home town since 2013.

The workshop will take place in Isotop Fellesatelier in the centre of Bergen city. This building houses 24 artists working accross photography, ceramics, print and dance, as well as a shop, KIOSKEN, selling work by local artists and designers, and Pamflett, a small publishing house focusing on graphic novels and fanzines. The workshop will be held in our project room, a large open space next to our wood and print workshops.
